Tube sheet To Tube Expansion Procedure


TUBE-SHEET TO TUBE EXPANSION PROCEDURE

Scope:

Scope of Tube sheet expansion procedure describes and specifies the technique, acceptance standards, and documentation requirement for tube expansion in heat ex changers.

Reference:

The current edition or addenda of the following documents has been referred in the preparation of Tube sheet Expansion procedure.
I.        TEMA
II.       ASME section VIII div. 1 – Rules for construction of pressure vessel.

Equipment to be used for the expansion:

              I.        An automatic torque control unit shall be used for carrying out the expansion.
             II.        The roller to be used shall have a generous radius at both the ends so as to ensure that there are no sharp steps on the expanded tube ID & to ensure that there is a smooth transition from expanded to unexpanded zone of the tubes.
            III.        Measuring instrument like Dial gauge & outside Micrometer / Vernier.

Expansion Mock – Up:

              I.        Take 300 x 300 mm side mock up block with thickens equal to tube sheets with same material as that of tube sheet. Drill the tube holes in the mock up block, of diameter & pitch as per Tubesheet drawing.
             II.        Measure and record the tube hole inside diameter (ID).
            III.        Cut tube 150 mm long other than tube sheet thickness and tube projection length as per drawing from the same material & wall thickness to be used in job.
           IV.        Measure & record tube ID & tube OD.
            V.        Put mandrel of proper length, based on required expansion length.
           VI.        Carry out expansion of tube of at least of 09 nos. Tube by mechanical expansion ( Tube rolling).
          VII.        Measure & record increase in the tube ID & the torque value.
         VIII.        Calculate % of thinning of tube using the following formula.


                                  (tube sheet hole ID – Expanded ID)
% Thinning = {1 - ----------------------------------------------------------- } x 100
                                           ( Tube OD – Tube ID)
           IX.        Thinning the tube should be in the range of 1 – 5 %.
            X.        Following details shall be noted:
a)     Data indicating the tube hole ID, Tube OD & Tube ID before expansion & tube ID after expansion for each tube expanded.
b)    The torque value used for each tube expanded.
c)     The make, model no. & serial no of the torque control unit used for the expansion.
d)    After establishing the torque valve on mock – up block to get the required % thinning tabulate the measurements in the attached format.

 Set – up And Expansion of Tubes in Tube sheet:

I.          Insert the tubes in the tubesheet from one end.
II.         Set the tube projection to max. 3mm in one end, as required in the drawing. Carry out expansion in one end. Check the projection on the other end. If the tube projection is more than 4mm then the tube ends are to be trimmed to maintain the projection at 4mm. Carry out expansion on the other end.

 Inspection after Expansion:

I.          100% tubes shall be inspected to ensure that the tubes are expanded.
II.         Tube to tube sheet joint shall be examined during hydro test to detect leakage, if any.
III.        In the event of leakage, the tube shall be re – expanded. Care shall be taken to ensure that there is no excessive thinning of the tubes.

Minimum Radius of Pipe or Tube Bending

In Bending a pipe or Tube Outer Part of bend is Stretched and Inner part is compressed Due to this stresses pipe or tube can be flatten or Collapse.

To avoid flatten and collapsing Pipe or Tube minimum radius of bending to be equal 3.5 to 4 times diameter for standard pipe  and 2.5 to 4 diameter for Extra Heavy pipe.

so while bending of Tube or Pipe we have to keep in mind minimum radius.

General Guaidline for Fabrication of Pressure Vessel

  1. Code of construction of Pressure Vessel should be noted on Mechanical Data Sheet or Fabrication Drawing.
  2. Latest Applicable Code of Construction Shall be made in all aspects.
  3. Design and fabrication Drawing should be approved by the client before starting of fabrication of pressure vessel.
  4. Thickness Indicated on fabrication drawing shall be minimum Thickness and shall be achieved after fabrication or machining.
  5. Any Change in Thickness on higher side shall be acceptable but written approval shall be taken by Client before commencing of further work.
  6. Tolerance for fabrication shall be maintain within limits given by the client.
  7. Tested Material Should be used in fabrication of Pressure vessel.
  8. All External weld Shall be wire brush and weld spatter remove from joints completely.
  9. Vessel Shall be Cleaned from inside and all Dust,Dirt,Slag etc shall be removed before hydro testing of vessel.
  10. Vessel Shall be dried after Hydro testing.
  11. All Internal part preferably be of removable type and maximum weight of the individual piece shall not exceeds 20 kg.Unless noted otherwise on Mechanical datasheet .
  12. Only Qualified Welder Shall be Deployed for Fabrication of pressure vessels.
  13. Whenever Spot Radiography Specified on the Drawing it means that minimum 10% radiography of Longitudinal and Circumferential Seam. & 100% Radiography of all "T" joints.
  14. Nozzle Neck Shall be Made from Seamless Pipe & If Nozzle fabricated from Plate then Weld seam shall be 100 % Radio graphed.
  15. Dish end Shall be normally made from single plate. large sized Dish end may be fabricated by joining plates. this joint shall be 100% radiography after forming. Joint Location and Detail Indicated on fabrication Drawing & "T" Joint to be avoided.
  16. Internal Coil,Suction Heater,External Limpet Coil Shall be separately hydro tested When main Shell is not under hydro tested.
  17. All Manhole Cover or Blind Flanges weighing more than 30 Kg that shall be provided with Davits and hinges.
